I’m crazy about mermaids. I don’t want to be one for all the reasons Iliza Shlesinger says and also that docufiction about mermaids. Growing up, The Little Mermaid was one of my favorite movies, and then I read the actual story by Hans Christian Andersen. As a gay boy longing for love, the tragedy was all too real.
But it didn’t stop there. Apparently, it was Andersen’s (one-way) love story that inspired the fairy tale. And it was a gay one.
Another source of inspiration for this photoshoot is Sade’s iconic music video of the aptly tragic song “No Ordinary Love.”
I created the mermaid tail by copying (or attempting to copy) the Mermaid doll from Barbie Gold Label Fantasy Collection. The mirror was from a pendant I used to wear and I use the same Barbie hair extension as the one in the “Moon Goddess Ru” shoot.
