I’m one of those gays who love all things camp like John Waters, Bruce Villanch, Sailor Moon, and of course, Sarah Brightman.
That image of Ms. Brightman coming out in a black bikini with sweeping pink tulle train, rising some 30+ feet on the air on a swing with roses and showering the audience with rose petals in the Harem Live in Las Vegas DVD was etched so deeply in my brain that I needed to channel it through the RuPaul doll.
I bought Barbie blonde hair extension on eBay and a nondescript Barbie dress. I cut out a crescent-shaped cardboard, covered it with aluminum foil and white millinery roses (the same technique I used for the Rurandot shoot).
Although, I have to say this: I used to love, love, love Sailor Moon. When I was in junior high, I collected the Naoko Takeuchi comic series and even her art books. But I rewatched it a few years ago and just hated it because I found the female characters to be really dependent on the men (namely Tuxedo Mask).
