I went to my first Halloween costume party in 2017. It was at The Federal in North Hollywood. I know, I'm so fresh-off-the-boat. For my first Halloween costume, I decided to merge three figures (fictional and real) who have been most influential for me in that year.
Wonder Woman
The memory of my childhood of seeing Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman on TV and reading the comic books, collided with the memory of spending my junior high until university with Pandu. And now, I have this pink pullover from one of the most corrupt and unfair fast fashion companies to remind me of one of the happiest days of 2019 when I finally got to see my best friend of 25 years.
Ah, the pentagram. I can't remember when exactly I started being obsessed with this shape. The logo of my new website also has a star while way back when, it was always a hand-drawn cat. I'm still cat-crazy, though.
One aspect I'm not crazy about the new Wonder Woman habit is the boots. While I love the new armor-looking footwear with the practical and necessary knee and shin guards, I don't understand the wedges part. I hate wedges because they're so ugly, but running in heels can be dangerous and damaging to the body. Heck, wearing heels constantly will damage your body. Just ask Victoria Beckham.
I'm so sick and tired of seeing Superman and Batman and Captain America and Black Panther and Iron Man and Spider-Man logos on shirts for both men and women, and when it comes to female heroes like Wonder Woman, there are very limited options in men's apparel.
My love for reading lead me to my love for writing, which lead me to getting my MFA in creative writing, which lead me to writing my thesis about drag queens and cross-gender traditional performers in Indonesia, which lead me to being a fellow of Lambda Literary, which lead me to publishing my debut nonfiction Gentlemen Prefer Asians: Tales of Gay Indonesians and Green Card Marriages.
I saw Wonder Woman in theaters four more times after that. In IMAX 3D at AMC Burbank 16, in 4DX at Regal LA Live, in regular digital at Vista, and finally in 70mm at ArcLight Hollywood.
